On August 27, at the EDA development sub-forum of the 2020 World semiconductor Conference, Dr. Lv Penghao from CCID Consulting Co., Ltd. introduced the development status and trends of the global EDA industry.
EDA has a long history and can be roughly divided into three stages, namely the CAD stage in the 1970s, the CAE stage in the 1980s, and the EDA stage in the 1990s. At present, EDA software is constantly updated and iterated under the impetus of Moore’s Law.
According to the calculation and analysis of a professor at the University of California, if the cost of a system SOC is about 40 million US dollars, without the advancement of EDA technology, the cost will reach 7.7 billion US dollars, and the EDA software reduces the design cost by 200 times.
Lv Penghao then introduced the market size and growth of the global EDA industry from 2015 to 2019.
According to the chart, it can be seen that the EDA industry is large in scale, the overall growth rate is low, and the growth rate in the Asia-Pacific region is the fastest.
When introducing the development status of China’s EDA, Lv Penghao said that because of import dependence, China’s EDA had missed the golden period of development.
According to reports, before the 1980s, the Paris Coordination Committee imposed an embargo on my country, and foreign EDA could not enter China. In 1988, the domestic EDA tool “Panda System” was launched, and the Panda System was officially released in 1991.
In 1994, Paris lifted the embargo against China, but because of its dependence on imports, autonomy entered a period of silence. In 2008, EDA software set sail again, and successively established companies such as Huada Jiutian and Core Vision, and established a major EDA project of nuclear high base.
By 2019, my country’s EDA manufacturers have gradually gained world recognition. But at present, the domestic EDA market share is still relatively low.
According to statistics, the size of my country’s EDA market in 2019 was about US$580 million, accounting for only 5.6% of the global market. The total revenue of Chinese EDA manufacturers is less than 420 million yuan, accounting for only 0.6% of the global market share; a year-on-year increase of 14.3%, and the localization rate is about 10%. Synopsys, Cadence and Mentor account for more than 85% of the domestic EDA market.
Lv Penghao said that the current status of domestic EDA is: the support of advanced technology is not enough, and it has not yet entered the alliance of advanced foundries. The core tool modules of digital chip design are lacking and cannot support the whole process design, but it has advantages in some subdivision fields.
Overall, there are still some difficulties in the development of EDA in China, including a serious shortage of EDA talent supply, insufficient industrial ecology, harsh application environment, and weak integration of EDA manufacturers with advanced technology.
The domestic EDA talent supply is seriously insufficient: there are about 1,500 people doing EDA R&D in China. Except for those who work in the Chinese R&D centers of international EDA companies, there are only about 500 real local EDA R&D personnel.
Insufficient industrial ecology and harsh application environment: Many companies have used foreign software for a long time and dare not easily try domestic software. In addition, many small and medium-sized enterprises have poor awareness of copyright/intellectual property rights, and piracy is rampant, which is not beneficial to the iteration of domestic EDA.
The combination of EDA manufacturers and advanced technology is relatively weak: domestic EDA manufacturers are relatively lacking in PDK foundation, the cooperation between EDA enterprises and international advanced fabs is weak, and domestic fabs are limited in improving their own manufacturing technology.
In this regard, Lv Penghao put forward 4 suggestions for the development of EDA, which are the support of the country’s will, the huge market demand, the progress of my country’s chip foundry process, and the opportunities for AI and cloud computing.
Lv Penghao said that in 2019, there were 1,780 companies involved in chips in my country, and a huge industrial scale has been cultivated to provide a large enough market for the development of domestic EDA software.
